JOB TITLE: SENIOR HIGH PRINCIPAL

 

REQUIREMENTS: Master’s Degree in Secondary School Administration

                            A valid Nebraska certificate in administration and supervision

                            Minimum of five years in education.

                            Previous experience in administration is preferred.

                            Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable

JOB GOAL: The Senior High Principal shall be in direct charge of all phases of operations within the high school including buildings and grounds and the supervision of classified personnel and certified staff.  The Senior High Principal will serve as the instructional leader in the building and work cooperatively with diverse stakeholder groups to build effective working relationships and collaborative partnerships that align with district goals. The Senior High Principal will utilize dynamic leadership skills to foster a learning focused culture that effectively promotes the educational and social development of each student.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve month year.  Salary and work year to be established by the Board of Education.  Approximately twenty days of vacation annually to be arranged and approved through the Superintendent.

 

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of administrative personnel.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

INSTRUCTION:

·  Makes periodic visitations to classrooms endeavoring to improve the quality of teaching and evaluate the performance of the teacher.

·  Serves on staff committees, holds membership in professional organizations, attends appropriate conferences and clinics, and becomes familiar with innovative methods in instruction and curriculum.

·  Is involved in the formulation of instructional objectives; and implementation of effective instructional practices.

·  Develops a staff development program in collaboration with the Director of Teaching and Learning to assist staff in keeping current with best practices and theory in education.

CURRICULUM:

·  Keeps the needs of students foremost in mind when considering the curriculum and instructional program.

·  Collaborates with teachers to develop and maintain curriculum standards, and set performance goals and objectives.

·  Evaluates curricula, teaching methods, and programs to determine their effectiveness, efficiency, and utilization, and to ensure that school activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations.

STAFF:

·  Has the authority and responsibility of delegating duties and responsibilities to all members of the professional and non-certificated staff.

·  Strives to develop good rapport with staff members and to maintain high staff morale.

·  Reviews credentials, make recommendations and serve as a member of the interviewing team in selection of new Senior High staff members.

·  Makes recommendations through a program of supervision and evaluation regarding staff retention or dismissal.  Recommendations for dismissal shall be made only after proper legal and ethical procedures have been utilized.

·  Schedules staff meetings as needed.

·  Becomes thoroughly familiar with school board policies and the administrative procedures of the school district. Will be able to converse intelligently about these policies and procedures and give interpretations to members of the staff.

·  Plans orientations for newly assigned Senior High staff members, and provides close supervision offering them assistance, encouragement, and advice.

PUBLIC RELATIONS:

·  Responsible for translating Senior High procedures and policies to the student body, parents, civic organizations, and the community at large.

·  Responsible for the development of a purposeful and sequential public relations program which will include regular releases to the news media, supervision of school publications, regular communication with parents and patrons, and the maintenance of a comprehensive program of communication with all staff.

·  Actively involved in the community.

·  Handle complaints from patrons or parents which affect the school, refer to the Superintendent, all cases which the Principal cannot adjust satisfactorily.

·  Comply with the grievance and complaint policies established by the Board of Education and the Superintendent.

BUDGET:

·  Distributes necessary budget information and assists staff in requesting supplies, equipment, repair, and textbooks.

·  Determines allocation of funds for staff, supplies, materials, and equipment and authorizes purchases.

·  Responsible for the total budget of the school, to include the Activities account.

MISCELLANEOUS:

·  Promotes high standards of student conduct and supervises the Assistant Principals and Dean of Students in enforcing discipline, keeping in mind the student's right to due process.

·  Responsible for the safety and maintenance of the school facility. This responsibility shall include regular inspection of the premises, both exterior and interior and prompt action to correct any problems which become apparent.

·  Responsible for the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students.

·  Informs Central Administrative Office staff of Senior High activities.

·  Responsible for the coordination and supervision of all school activities.

·  Responsible for the rental of school facilities to external groups.  

·  Responsible for reporting staff absences and for the securing, assigning, and supervision of substitute teachers.

·  Responsible for other duties as assigned by Central Office administrators, the Superintendent, or the Board of Education.
