8:30     Welcome  by Jolene Palmer, State School Security Director, NDE
                Black Swan
John-Michael Keyes, Executive Director, I Love U Guys Foundation
An unforgettable story of an inconceivable event and, in the aftermath, how it changed the world.  The term black swan stems from the old belief that all swans were white, and was used in reference to something impossible. When black swans were discovered in Southern Australia, the meaning changed. The term is now used to refer to an improbable event.  John-Michael connects the violent incident at Platte Canyon High School as well as the outcomes of the aftermath, the programs of The “I Love U Guys” Foundation, with the Black Swan Theory showing black swan events can be both negative and positive.

10:30    Break

10:45    Threat Assessment
Mario Scalora, Director, University of Nebraska Public Policy Center
Threat assessment and management evolved from practices used to assess and manage potential risk of violence. A  school threat assessment team will help your school focus on identifying, assessing and managing the risk/threat of violence posed by students, staff, and community members toward the school community. Threat assessment is a critical element in the prevention strategies to avoid an incident. Dr. Scalora will make a case for the reasons why your school should have a threat assessment team.

11:45    Preventing School Violence: Best Practices for Intelligence Gathering, Information Sharing and Protected Methods of Reporting
Susan Payne, Director, Founder and Executive Director of Safe2Tell
Prevention and early intervention are the keys to stopping school violence and saving lives. Successfully doing so includes both gathering and sharing information with trusted partners such as schools and law enforcement.  Safe2Tell is a nationally recognized, model prevention strategy that provides an anonymous way for students to report threatening situations and concerning behaviors, allowing a team of caring adults to intervene at the earliest point possible. As Founding Director, Susan will discuss Safe2Tell’s history, share lessons learned since Columbine and highlight advancements in technology that contribute to maintaining the quality and fidelity of the program. Sharing insight gathered from 25 years of experience in law enforcement and community safety, Susan's stories and experience inspire and encourage all those working in prevention while providing a basis for successful models and best practices.
