8:30  The first step: Utilizing High Quality IEPs for Instructional Planning with Sped Strategies
IEPs are an instructional tool that creates a ladder to grade level standards for students with disabilities. The structure and content of IEPs limits the meaningful use and application of IEPs in instructional planning. Teams must engage in thoughtful planning to pull out the highest leverage content in IEPs that teachers need to meaningfully plan for their students.  School leaders must create a space for general education and special education teachers to intentionally collaborate to ensure accessible and meaningful content is placed in front of all students.  This can be accomplished through multiple ways and can exist outside the space of a face-to-face meeting.

9:00 Let’s Take A Step Back: Assessing What We Know and What We Are Learning About Compliance Priorities with Karen Haase, KSB School Law
Periodically the federal Office of Special Education Programs announces particular areas of IDEA compliance that the staff in Washington, DC should emphasize.  Like all other substances that roll downhill, the OSEP emphasis is enforced against state departments of education which in turn begin looking at compliance in local education agencies.  This does not mean we should all step off a cliff! Instead, both general education and special education professionals can step into their power. School attorney Karen Haase will examine the areas of compliance in which Nebraska schools are a step ahead of other states and will provide actionable steps Nebraska schools can take to step up their special education compliance game.  Attendees will leave this practical, fast paced session with step by step tools that they can return home with to comply with the law in a sensible way.
