NCSA hosts this annual workshop to help prepare those with an interest in pursuing a superintendent position in the future.  If you're considering the step into a superintendent position, the Emerging Superintendent's Conference is something you will want to attend.

9:00    Welcome

9:05    Facets of the Superintendency
           Dr. Shanna Gannon, Shelton Public Schools
           Trevor Anderson, Kimball Public Schools
Two first-year superintendents will join us to discuss their experience researching the position, their interview, accepting the job, and transitioning into the position. They will share the heartaches, frustrations, and successes during the honeymoon period of their first superintendency.

9:45    Marketing Yourself for the Superintendency
           Dr. Eric Weber, Lincoln Public Schools
This session will help attendees learn proven resume and cover letter techniques allowing you to present yourself in a manner that will enhance your application. Samples will be provided.

10:30  Preparing to be the Lead Communicator
           Annette Eyman, Papillion La Vista Community Schools
Although everyone in a school district plays a role in delivering communication, the role of the superintendent is to provide the foundation and maintain effective systems.  Papillion La Vista Director of Communications, Annette Eyman, will discuss the importance and challenges of being a lead communicator.    
11:15  Advocacy
           Dr. Mike Dulaney, NCSA 
School district advocacy is one of the more under-rated aspects of the position of superintendent.  This session will explore ways in which a superintendent can effectively promote his or her school district and the issues it faces.

12:15  Internal and External Prep
           Dr. Jim Sutfin, Millard Public Schools
In this session Dr. Jim Sutfin will help you prepare for, succeed in, and appropriately follow up from an interview.  He will review questions you are likely to be asked and examples of best practice.  This session will prepare you to walk into interviews with confidence.

1:00    Assessing the Financial Position of a District
           Jason Buckingham, Ralston Public Schools
Before deciding to apply to an open superintendent position it’s good to consider how that district stands financially.  This will provide you some insight into what you’ll be expected to address if you would accept that position.  Jason will share ideas on how to assess the financial condition of a district as well as some financial duties to expect when you do land a job as the leader of a school district.

1:45    Being Your Best Self
           Dr. John Skretta, ESU #6
ESU #6 Director, Dr. John Skretta, shares strategies and offers practical advice on finding and maintaining balance. He will describe how to master the intensive and stressful demands of leading a district or organization while honoring personal commitments - to yourself - and as a parent, a spouse, and friend to others.

2:30    The Superintendent Transition Plan
           Dr. Dan Ernst, NCSA
Dr. Ernst will review first-year superintendent transition plans and discuss the components of what should be included and why transition plans are important to the new superintendent.  In addition, you will learn how to organize your materials in a way that will allow you to best promote your candidacy.
