Emerging Superintendents Workshop

NCSA hosts this annual workshop to help prepare those with an interest in pursuing a superintendent position in the future.  If you're considering the step into a superintendent position, the Emerging Superintendent's Conference is something you will want to attend.

8:30     Facets of the Superintendency
            Dr. Dawn Lewis, Arnold and Callaway Public Schools
Arnold and Callaway Public School Superintendent Dr. Dawn Lewis will discuss the various aspects of leadership from the perspective of a multi-district superintendent.  From personal growth to district management, Dawn will provide you a recap of her first four years.

9:15     Marketing Yourself on Paper
            Dr. Enid Schonewise, Westside Community Schools
This session will help attendees learn proven resume and cover letter techniques in order to allow you to present yourself in a manner that will enhance your application. Samples will be provided.

10:15     Preparing to be the Lead Communicator
            Annette Eyman, Papillion-La Vista Community Schools
Although everyone in a school district plays a role in delivering communication, the role of the superintendent is to provide the foundation and maintain effective systems.  Papillion-La Vista Director of Communications Annette Eyman will discuss the importance and challenges of being a lead communicator.

School district advocacy is one of the more under-rated aspects of the position of superintendent.  This session will explore ways in which a superintendent can effectively promote his or her school district and the issues it faces.

12:15     Internal and External Prep
             Dr. Josh Fields, Seward Public Schools
In this session, Dr. Josh Fields will help you prepare for, succeed in, and appropriately follow up from an interview.  He will review questions you are likely to be asked and examples of best practice.  This session will prepare you to walk into interviews with confidence.

1:00     Being Prepared to be Unprepared
            Dr. Heather Nebesniak, Ord Public Schools
A well planned transition plan is crucial to the success of a new superintendent, however; there are many things that a new superintendent encounters that isn't addressed by the transition plan.  Between the original hire and the start date, events can transpire that can sideline original goals of the transition plan.  Dr. Heather Nebesniak, Superintendent of Ord Public Schools, shares about her first few months as superintendent and about navigating the "unexpected", along with some insights on the value of proactively building board and community relations early in the transition process.

1:45     Being Your Best Self
             Dr. John Skretta, Norris School District
Norris Superintendent, Dr. John Skretta, shares strategies and offers practical advice on finding and maintaining balance. He will describe how to master the intensive and stressful demands of the superintendency while honoring personal commitments - to yourself - and as a parent, a spouse, and friend to others.

2:30     The Superintendent Transition Plan
            Dr. Dan Ernst, NCSA
Dr. Ernst will review first-year superintendent transition plans and discuss the components of what should be included and why transition plans are important to the new superintendent.  In addition, you will learn how to organize your materials in a way that will allow you to best promote your candidacy.
